In December 2024, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet.
The resignation occurred amid internal disagreements over fiscal policy and looming U.S. tariffs. Freeland opposed Trudeau’s proposal of $250 cheques to working Canadians earning $150,000 or less, referring to it as a “costly political gimmick.”
Her departure came just before the announcement of the government’s fall economic statement, which revealed a deficit of $61.9 billion for 2023–24, exceeding Freeland’s target of $40.1 billion.
